41st tourism analysis on the travel behaviour of Germans – travel continues to boom

1 min read

To coincide with the Reisen & Caravaning trade fair in Hamburg, which was attended by 65,000 predominantly very satisfied visitors at the beginning of February, market researchers are presenting figures for the whole of Germany. These give many German camping entrepreneurs a positive outlook for 2025.

Camping continues to grow
As already reported by dpa and PiNCAMP with reference to the Federal Statistical Office, the camping industry in Germany counted around 42.9 million overnight stays in 2024 – almost 20% more than in the pre-corona year 2019!

No sign of crisis mood when travelling
For the 41st Tourism Analysis, the Foundation for Future Studies surveyed a representative sample of 3,000 people in Germany to examine travel behaviour in 2024 and identify trends for 2025. We have summarised the key findings for you.

Travelling continues to boom – as a break from everyday life
In 2024, 63% took a holiday trip lasting at least five days – more than in 2023 or the pre-coronavirus year 2019. Similarly positive figures to 2024 are expected for the current year.

Average holiday spending at an all-time high
Germans do not appear to be cutting back on holiday spending either, despite economic uncertainty in everyday life: 1,544 euros were spent on holidays in 2024. That is 4% more than in the previous year and 44% more than in 2016.

Early booking is key
According to the tourism analysis, 36% of respondents plan their holiday bookings as early as possible. Of those surveyed with a household income of over 5,000 euros per month, as many as 48% book early.

Our conclusion: Campsite operators who are in the market online with early bookings can still score points in February – and thus secure even broader, reliable capacity utilisation.
