Two Stars from ADAC, but Five Stars from Guests: Which Rating Can Campers Trust?

4 min read
  • Stars are not all the same: The PiNCAMP analysis of nearly 15,000 European campsites reveals fundamental differences between the stars of the ADAC classification and the stars from community guest reviews.
  • Trend towards the highest rating: While the ADAC classification predominantly (77%) rates the quality of the campsite offering with 3 and 4 stars in the middle and upscale segment, two-thirds (64%) of campsites receive the top rating of 5 stars in guest reviews.
  • Quality versus satisfaction: The ADAC classification objectively measures the quality and facilities of the campsite. In contrast, guests primarily evaluate their highly personal, subjective satisfaction with the overall experience.
  • Quality assessment 2026 starts: Starting June 6, inspectors will once again check over 200 individual criteria at campsites across Europe – independently, standardized, and tamper-proof.

When booking a holiday, people often rely on online ratings. However, a current evaluation by PiNCAMP, the ADAC’s camping portal, shows that caution is advised: The stars from community guest reviews and the official stars from the ADAC classification sometimes diverge massively. The analysis now proves this discrepancy for the first time with concrete figures and explains how campers can optimally combine the two different star systems for their holiday planning.

The Contrast: Highest Rating Inflationary versus Selective

The analysis of almost 15,000 European campsites clarifies the contrast between guest reviews and the stars of the official ADAC classification:

Guest Reviews from the Community: Inflationary Highest Rating for 64% of Sites
In guest reviews, almost two-thirds (64%) of all campsites shine with the top rating of 5 stars. Another third of the sites (32%) are in the middle segment (3 to 4 stars). Only 4% of campsites receive less than 2 stars.

The Stars of the ADAC Classification: Selective Highest Rating for only 13% of Sites
The ADAC’s camping experts award the highest rating of 5 stars (“ADAC Superplatz”) to only 13% of campsites. The large majority (77%) is placed in the middle and upscale segment (39% with 3 stars and 38% with 4 stars). 10% of sites fall into the 2-star (9%) or 1-star (1%) range.

The Cause: Objective Quality Measurement versus Subjective Satisfaction

“The respective figures do not contradict each other; rather, they are based on two fundamentally different measurement procedures,” explains Uwe Frers, camping expert and managing director of PiNCAMP. The ADAC classification focuses on objective quality. The basis is on-site visits by trained and independent inspectors who strictly, objectively, and independently evaluate the facilities and quality of the campsite based on 200 defined criteria. In contrast, guest reviews reflect individual satisfaction. A very simple, nature-oriented site where one can admire the starry sky at night can fully meet a guest’s expectations and generate a 5-star rating after their stay. However, this says nothing about the actual quality of the sanitary facilities and the facility level of the site.”

Success Formula for Holiday Planning: Combining Both Systems

For campers, the analysis results in a clear recommendation on how to get the most out of both systems and avoid disappointments at the holiday destination:

Step 1: Secure the foundation with the stars of the ADAC classification. First, check whether the campsite meets the specific demands for facilities and quality, for example, the standard of the sanitary facilities, the distance to the beach, or amenities such as accessibility, pool, or playgrounds. This is easiest on PiNCAMP.de or in the PiNCAMP Camping App, where campers can specifically filter by ADAC stars or concrete facility criteria.

Step 2: Fine-tune with guest reviews. With around 500,000 guest reviews on PiNCAMP.de, campers can, in the second step, understand how other guests experienced the campsite. Was the team friendly at check-in? Are the portions in the restaurant rather large or rather small? What is the atmosphere like on the site? How do campers with similar needs (e.g., families with children) rate the local offerings?

The Success Formula: The perfect campsite meets the personal minimum standards for facilities in the ADAC classification and, at the same time, convinces in current guest reviews through high overall community satisfaction. For campers, this means: Even in the supposed 3-star middle segment of the ADAC classification, countless 5-star holiday experiences beloved by guests are waiting.

Background: About the ADAC Classification and the Start of the 2026 Inspection

Up to five stars, over 200 criteria, uniformly applied throughout Europe – the ADAC classification makes campsites fairly comparable and top campsites visible. Since campers have clear priorities, the five central assessment areas of the ADAC classification are weighted differently:

  • Sanitary Facilities (40%): Facilities, number, cleanliness, and condition of sanitary facilities.
  • Site Grounds (25%): Overall impression, public areas, as well as the design and facilities of the site grounds and pitches.
  • Leisure Activities (12.5%): Sports, games, wellness, leisure, and entertainment offers for different target groups.
  • Bathing and Swimming (12.5%): Bathing opportunities on-site or in the immediate vicinity (pool, lake, river, or sea).
  • Supply (10%): Shopping facilities, gastronomy, and other supply offers on the site.

The inspectors start their Europe-wide tours on June 6, 2026, to assess the status of the campsites on behalf of the ADAC. Their standardized on-site data collection is completely independent and excludes any influence by the campsite operators.

Only campsites with the highest proven level of service receive the top rating of 5 stars and thus the “ADAC Superplatz” award. A reliable recommendation for campers looking for an above-average level of service is also the “ADAC Tipp” (ADAC Tip) award. This includes all campsites with 4.0 to 4.5 stars.

Methodological Note on the Analysis

The data analysis examines the relationship between the stars of the official ADAC classification and the approximately 500,000 guest reviews on PiNCAMP (as of May 2026). The data basis is a total dataset of nearly 15,000 European campsite profiles, including almost 6,000 sites with ADAC classification. For better comparability, the different scales (e.g., the 10-point scale of PiNCAMP guest reviews) were converted to a uniform 5-point system. The analysis considers the percentage of campsites that achieved the respective overall result in their rating category.
